Both PPORA-supported races this weekend take place at the South Gloucestershire course at Woodford. The first is a PPORA Intermediate Race, for which 10 have been entered, and it looks like a competitive race, with six of the entries rated over 100. Foremost of these is Josh Newman’s El Capitaine, who won his fifth race on the bounce on Monday and is in the running to be leading horse this season. Josh also has the joint-second top-rated in Whitsand Bay, who has disappointed this season. Bradley Gibbs’ Crocodile Lounge achieved the distinction of being the first horse to be disqualified for overuse of the whip in a point-to-point and is stepping up in grade from Restricteds, as is Gina Andrews’ Cheytac, who built on his early season promise when winning at Fakenham. Kilfilum Woods, trained by Francesca Poste, won his first two starts this season and has been unlucky on his most recent outings and Katie Croft’s Baunmore Jet – another taking a rise in class – ran well at Maisemore Park and would be bidding to give Molly Armytage, daughter of Grand National winner Marcus, a first win. Don’t rule out A Quick Risk either – the Martin Wanless-trained horse was progressive last year and is bound to come on for his reappearance.
The following race is a PPORA Level 3 Conditions Race, for horses aged eight and over, which has attracted 12 entries. Kilfilum Woods is also in here, and is top-rated in this less exalted company, closely followed by Bradley Gibbs’ father David’s Ask Dai, who is consistent, but lightly raced. Jessica Nevin’s Ecco, placed on all three starts this season, is another to fit the consistency bill, while Ben Case’s Shanty Alley ran well last time, as did Kim Sly’s veteran, 14-year-old Bentons Lad, on his seasonal debut. Mot Pour Mot – trained by Fred Hutsby – has shown nothing this season, but his Kingston Blount win in May is the best recent form in the field, so he must be considered on that basis.
